Ketones in the body

The “Keto” in the Ketogenic Diet comes from the fact that our bodies produce small fuel molecules called “ketones”. It is an alternative fuel for the body, when blood sugar (glucose) is in low supply.

Ketones are produced when we eat very few carbohydrates (which are converted into glucose very quickly in the body) and eat enough protein, according to the body's needs (because some of the protein is also converted into glucose in the body). Ketones are produced in the liver, from fat.

They are then used as fuel for the body including our brain. The brain is a “hungry organ” that consumes a lot of energy every day.

And this can't be done directly by fat, but it can be done directly by glucose or ketones. In the Ketogenic Diet, our body converts its fuel supply from glucose to fat.

Insulin levels become very low and fat burning will occur dramatically. It becomes very easy to access the fat stores in the body and burn them.

Of course this is great if we are trying to lose weight. And another advantage of the Ketogenic Diet is that we are not easily hungry and always have energy.

When our body produces ketones, it is said that our body experiences "ketosis". This is where the weight loss process will be effective.

One of the fastest ways to reach ketosis is by "fasting", eating nothing (except water, tea or unsweetened coffee). However, no one will be able to fast forever.
