What is the distance between planting oil palm trees?

Good planting of oil palm in the field will produce healthy plants (nothing abnormal, non-productive, dead; so that the need for rapid production (less than 30 months after planting).

Spacing

  1. The spacing pattern for oil palms is an equilateral triangle with several recommended spacing;
  2. Determination of spacing in the field must be adjusted to plant characteristics, fertility levels, topography, and local conditions
  3. Regular distance can only be achieved if good stakes are carried out;
  4. The spacing system for oil palms is closely related to the population per hectare (tree density / ha) and bunch production per tree.
  5. plant density (tree density / ha) which affects more plant growing space;
  6. Planting that is too dense will have an impact on the problem of high growth (density problem) of oil palm plants and competition in nutrient absorption, reduced intensity of sunlight entering the plant so that it will affect photosynthesis;
  7. Plant density will also affect sex ratio, body weight, plant height, reduced stem circumference, reduced leaf production and increased leaf length
  8. In Ganoderma endemic areas, spacing with a density of 148 - 150 trees / ha is recommended, which aims to maintain the population of production plants until the age of 25 years.
Oil palm spacing patterns and palm plant densities are presented in table 6 below:

What is Oil Palm Piling?

  1. Piling is the activity of arranging the location of oil palm plants at a certain distance so that the distance between rows and the distance in the rows is clear.
  2. This is intended to prevent and overcome lack of sunlight which can cause changes in the morphology of palm plants;
  3. The direction of the rows of oil palm trees is generally North-South, but in certain circumstances the direction of the rows can be changed and adapted to the topography of the field;
  4. Piling in an even / flat area is not difficult to do, the distance between rows and within rows must match the actual distance;
  5. For hilly areas, the row direction and spacing are made depending on the crop management system.

Planting

Plant preparation

  • Plantable Area Requirements

    • Areas where the cover crop (LCC) has completely covered, at least 40%.
    • It aims to maintain soil moisture, reduce surface erosion and increase organic matter and nutrient reserves, and suppress weed growth, and prevent Oryctes attacks.

  • Transportation of oil palm seeds to the field

    • Two weeks before planting in the field, the seeds are rotated so that the roots penetrate the ground cut off and have regenerated;
    • Before being transported, the seeds must be watered as much as possible so that the needs and transparency of the seeds are balanced.
    • The transportation of seeds to the field is carried out by trucks with a loading capacity of 120-200 seeds;
    • The seeds planted in the field are 12 months old;
    • Never hold the seeds by the roots, they should be lifted from the bottom of the plastic bag
    • Norms of loading / unloading seeds = 100 trees / HK

Retailing the seeds

The seeds that have been transported to the field are placed at the supply point. The seeds are retailed to the point of planting by placing the seeds next to the planting holes provided.

Planting Technique

  • The existing planting holes are measured first to find out whether the size of the holes has matched the specified.
  • The available planting hole is filled with soil and sprinkled 250 gr of Rock Phosphate (RP).
  • The bottom of the soil is given a plastic bag, then the seeds are put into the planting hole.
  • After the seeds are completely erect, the side of the poly bag is sliced from the bottom up and the polybag is pulled up.
  • The seeds are piled with top soil and compacted, then sown again with 250 gr of RP (Rock Phosphat) fertilizer.
  • The seeds are buried with sub soil and compacted, so that the location of the seeds is really sturdy
