How To Choose Ginger Seeds?

Selection of ginger seeds is a process of selecting ginger plant material. The aim is to ensure the stability and certainty of ginger cultivation results.

Basic Information Quality ginger seeds must have the following characteristics:

  1. Superior varieties with clearly identified origins;
  2. Is a pure species / variety that is not mixed;
  3. Derived from healthy parent plants 8-10 months old;
  4. No symptoms of wilt disease, rhizome flies and shell lice.
  5. If the rhizome seeds is broken, you will see a lot of fiber;
  6. The skin is tight and does not peel off easily;
  7. Ginger seeds color is more shiny and looks pithy;
  8. Weighs between 20-40 g (red ginger / emprit), 20-60 g (elephant ginger);
  9. The rhizome seeds has 2-3 buds;
  10. The seeds are not physically deformed (cuts, bruises);
  11. Need for seeds 1 - 1.5 tonnes / ha (red ginger / emprit), 2 - 2.5 tonnes / ha (elephant ginger), (including for embroidery).

Ginger seed selection work procedures

  1. Record the origin and duration of use of parent seeds;
  2. Select the mother plant ginger aged 9-10 months;
  3. Select rhizome skin that is tight and not easily peeled off;
  4. Choose a ginger color that is more shiny and looks pithy;
  5. Choose ginger rhizomes that weigh between 20-40 g;
  6. Select a rhizome that has 2-3 buds;
  7. Cover the wound / cut mark of the rhizome for the seedlings using burning ash or a paste made of cement;
  8. Leave the mother plant to be replanted if embroidery is needed.
