Does the country of Indonesia have high biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the diversity

Biodiversity is the diversity of living things on earth and its ecological roles which include ecosystem diversity, species diversity and genetic diversity. Biodiversity includes various types of plants, animals, microorganisms and their respective patterns of life.

Each type of plant, animal and microorganism has different benefits and roles for ecological functions and human life. The biodiversity of Indonesia's ecosystem covers an area of 5,000 km stretching from east to west.

Indonesia Biodiversity

The characteristics of the islands in Indonesia vary widely, ranging from narrow islands to islands with a very wide area and from flat to hilly and mountainous ones, producing a variety of ecosystems ranging from lowland forests, swamps, coastal areas and the sea.

The diversity of plant species owned by our country is 27,500 types of flowering plants (10% of all plant species in the world) and 300,000 species of animals (17% of all animals in the world). When viewed from statistical data relating to the number of species diversity, Indonesia always ranks in the top ranks in the world Biodiversity, namely:
  • Second after Brazil for mammalian diversity, with 515 species of which 39% are endemic;
  • Indonesia have 4th place for reptile diversity (511 species of which 150 are endemic);
  • Indonesia at fifth place for bird diversity (1,531 species, 397 endemic), Indonesian parrots rank first (75 species, 38 endemic);
  • Sixth for amphibian diversity (270 species, 100 endemic);
  • 4th place for primate diversity with 35 species;
  • Indonesia in third for freshwater fish diversity with 1,400 species.

Indonesia megabiodiversity countries

Indonesia as one of the megabiodiversity countries has ratified the Convention on Biological Diversity through Law Number 5 of 1994 concerning Ratification of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, one of which mandates that every country must formulate a strategy, action plan and biodiversity management program. In an effort to conserve the wealth of biodiversity in Bontang City and to support sustainable, efficient and effective use to improve the welfare of the community, it is necessary to acquire knowledge, information and availability of documents regarding regional biodiversity. This Natural Forest biodiversity book contains documentation of data and information regarding biodiversity, both flora and fauna.
