QRIS Digital Payments Will Expand Its Wings Across ASEAN Countries

Reaching 13 million users, QRIS will expand to all ASEAN countries

Head of the Bank Indonesia Payment System Policy Department Group Retno Ponco Windarti said the realization of using QRIS in 2021 had exceeded the target. It was recorded that until November 2021, there were already 13 million MSME merchants who used QRIS as their payment system.

"In 2021, our target is to acquire 12 million merchants with QRIS, but in November we have reached 13 million users of QRIS," said Retno at the Bank Indonesia Together with the Community (BIRAMA) 2021: Innovation Drives Economic Recovery, Jakarta, Friday (3/12).

Rapid development of QRIS

QRIS as Indonesia's standard QR code was present on 17 August 2019. Its development accelerated when the Covid-19 pandemic occurred.
QRIS is the safest payment system solution because it avoids direct interactions that have the potential to transfer the corona virus. In a short time, QRIS has now spread to 34 provinces.

QRIS payment users

Even the majority of QRIS users are MSME actors who run their business in the midst of difficult times. "As many as 88 percent of this is done by MSMEs so that it is hoped that they can help the community run their business during the pandemic," said Retno.

Currently, Retno said, Bank Indonesia is currently expanding QRIS and is starting to implement the open API (SNAP) standard in the payment system. These two things are being worked on by Bank Indonesia with the payment system association.

The goal is to accelerate the provision of better payment system services. "This is what BI and associations are currently building," he said.

QRIS digital payment trial in ASEAN

The Governor of Bank Indonesia, Perry Warjiyo, said that in the future the implementation of a digital payment system using QRIS will be expanded to ASEAN countries other than Thailand, namely the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore.

"We have also involved QR Indonesia across countries, and we are conducting trials in Thailand and soon with Malaysia, the Philippines, as well as Singapore. QRIS will cross countries in ASEAN and in other countries," said Perry at the 15th Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking (BMEB) International Conference and Call for Papers 2021, Thursday (2/9).

Perry is very grateful that during this covid-19 pandemic, precisely in August 2021, Bank Indonesia has introduced SNAP and QRIS between countries to make it easier for the public to make transactions in the economic and financial fields.

"Alhamdulillah, in August this year we introduced QRIS and SNAP to make it easier for people to make transactions in the economic and financial fields. And this is a game charger," he said.
