Oil palm was imported to Indonesia by the Dutch East Indies government in 1848. Some of the seeds were planted in the Bogor Botanical Gardens, while the rest of the seeds were planted on roadsides as ornamental plants in Deli, North Sumatra in the 1870s. At the same time, the demand for vegetable oil increased due to the Industrial Revolution in the mid-19th century. From this, the idea emerged to create oil palm plantations based on selected plants from Bogor and Deli, so the "Deli Dura" type of palm was recognized.
