Why is palm oil better than soybean oil?

What are CPO and PKO?

CPO stands for Crude Palm Oil or crude palm oil. Palm oil is different from palm kernel oil (palm kernel oil) which is produced from the same fruit kernel. Palm oil is also different from coconut oil which is produced from the kernel of the coconut fruit (Cocos nucifera).

Palm fruit is a source of raw material for CPO (Crude Palm Oil) and PKO (Palm Kernel Oil). CPO is produced from the pulp of the palm fruit, while PKO is produced from the kernel of the fruit. This is supported by Indonesia's large palm oil production capacity.

What is Crude Palm Oil used for?

Crude Palm Oil - CPO is used for the food, cosmetics, and biodiesel industries. Europe has regulations regarding renewable energy that must be integrated into household energy use since 2009.

What are the products of palm oil?

Let us take a look at some of the palm oil products in more detail.
  • Chocolate and chocolate jam.
  • Lipstick.
  • Margarine & buttery jam.
  • Soap. Palm oil helps keep skin clean and moisturised, making it an ideal ingredient for soap.
  • Pastry.
  • Instant noodle.
  • Shampoo.
  • Biodiesel.

What is the difference between palm oil palm oil and palm kernel oil?

Palm oil is found in the fleshy parts of the fruit (mesocarp), while palm kernel oil is found in the kernel or seeds of the fruit. The two oils have very different fatty acid compositions. Where palm oil contains 50% saturated fat and 50% unsaturated fat.

What factors influence the progress of palm oil companies in Indonesia?

Indonesia's success in becoming the world's vegetable oil champion, in general, is influenced by 3 factors, namely, first, the extent of agricultural land and plantations that have land suitability for oil palm cultivation. Second, the existence of a tropical climate that can support the fertility of oil palm plants.

Why is palm oil liquid?

Oil is liquid because it has a lower melting point than room temperature, while fat is solid because its melting point is higher than room temperature.

What are the products produced by the palm oil mill?

The pulp of the oil palm fruit (also known as mesocarp) is extracted into palm oil, and the kernel in the middle of the palm fruit can also be processed into palm kernel oil. Palm oil and palm kernel oil are used in many household products, from cooking oil to detergents.

What are the names of fatty acids in cooking oil or palm oil?

Palmitic acid is one of the fatty acids with the highest concentration in palm oil.

Does palm oil contain cholesterol?

Palm oil contains no cholesterol and also does not cause an increase in blood cholesterol. Conversely, consumption of palm oil actually improves blood cholesterol, which increases good cholesterol and reduces bad cholesterol.

So far, there is a growing perception that it has even become a myth that palm cooking oil contains cholesterol. So strong is this myth that people become phobic that eating foods that contain oil, such as fried foods, tends to be avoided for fear of cholesterol.

Is it true that palm cooking oil contains cholesterol?

So far, none of the nutritionists in the world have ever said that vegetable cooking oil such as palm cooking oil contains cholesterol. Cholesterol is only produced by animals and humans, while plants do not have the ability to produce cholesterol. (Calloway and Kurtz, 1956, USDA, 1979, Life Science Research Oce, 1985, Cottrell, 1991, Muhchtadi, 1998, Muhilal, 1998, Haryadi, 2010, Giriwono and Andarwulan, 2016). Palm cooking oil produced from oil palm plants does not contain cholesterol.

What about the consumption of palm cooking oil, does it increase body cholesterol?
This has also been proven by many nutrition and health experts. Hundreds of research results at home and abroad that have been published in international journals (among others: American Journal Of Clinic Nutrition, Journal Nutrition Biochemestry) have tested whether consumption of palm cooking oil increases body cholesterol.

The results generally produce conclusions that support that consumption of palm cooking oil does not increase body cholesterol. On the contrary, consumption of palm oil actually improves body cholesterol, which increases good cholesterol (HDL) and reduces levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides.

How come ? The answer turns out to be because palm oil contains a balanced fatty acid composition, contains essential fatty acids, contains active compounds and the cooking oil manufacturing process does not undergo hydrogenation.

So, why is the perception or myth that palm oil contains or causes cholesterol to emerge so far?
This perception was formed due to the negative / black campaign carried out by the American Soybean Association (ASA) in early 1980. To corner tropical vegetable oils, especially palm oil, which began to threaten the worldwide soybean oil market, ASA launched propaganda accusing palm oil of containing cholesterol and even asked the US government to ban tropical vegetable oils from entering the United States. However, these allegations have never been proven by researches of nutrition and health experts in various countries as mentioned above.

Why is oil palm an important commodity in Indonesia?

Palm oil is still one of Indonesia's mainstay commodities and the largest contributor to foreign exchange. The increasing demand for domestic vegetable oil and the large potential for exports of crude palm oil (cpo) have triggered the rapid growth of oil palm plantations in the country.

Which country is the largest exporter of palm oil in the world?

As is well known, Indonesia is the largest palm oil producing country. Indonesian CPO production based on USDA data reached 41.5 million tonnes in 2018 and is expected to increase to 43 million tonnes in 2019.

Why is coconut oil better than palm oil?

Coconut oil contains more saturated fat (fat without double bonds). So coconut oil is more stable when it is at high temperatures and is less easily oxidized than palm oil. As a result, coconut oil is not easily damaged and turns black when used for frying.

What are the drawbacks of soybean oil compared to palm oil?

Palm oil is rich in fats and vitamins, crude or unrefined palm oil contains 60 to 100 mg of vitamin E per 100 grams, as much as 70% of the vitamin E in palm oil contains tocotrienols. Other vegetable oils such as corn, olive, soybean and sunflower oil are good sources of tocopherols but do not contain tocotrienols. Tokotrienols work faster as antioxidants, which are substances that can prevent cell damage and death, DNA damage and the emergence of cancer cells or tumors due to the presence of free radicals in the human body.

There are many alternatives to vegetable oils that are produced and used daily, including soybean oil. But who would have thought that soybean oil actually had a negative impact.

Based on various studies, soybean oil is said to have an adverse effect on health. Reporting from Foodbeast (31/1) soybean oil does not always have a good effect, this oil is thought to cause obesity, affects heart health and is associated with autism, Alzheimer's to depression.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, soybean oil is by far the most produced and consumed vegetable oil in the United States. Recent research from UC Riverside reveals that soybean oil has a range of negative effects if not used wisely. This study involved male rats who were gradually fed soybean oil. In 2015, the UC Riverside research team discovered that soybean oil has an effect on obesity, diabetes and insulin resistance. Excess consumption of this oil makes the body fatten faster. This oil also makes the rat liver contain excess fat. Then in 2017, a study revealed new facts that soy oil causes obesity and insulin resistance. And this month, a study found soybean oil had a marked effect on hypothalamic reactions. "The hypothalamus is very sensitive to weight regulation and affects steroid function, glucose and body temperature. These parts also influence stress response," said Margarita Curras-Collazo, a UCR neuroscience professor and author of the study. In this study scientists also found that soybean oil affects oxytocin, a hormone that affects feelings of happiness. Of the mice sampled, the researchers found the hormone oxytocin tended to decrease after consumption of soybean oil. "The conclusion is that saturated fat is bad and unsaturated fat is good. Soybean oil is a polyunsaturated fat, but this oil has not been proven to be good for the body," said Frances Sldek, a UCR toxicologist. This research also proves that coconut oil which contains saturated fat is actually better. Coconut oil has little effect on genetic changes in the hypothalamus. The results of the research cannot be used as a benchmark because further research needs to be done. Researchers must ascertain the impact if it occurs in humans. The researchers also confirmed that these results are intended only for soybean oil products. This means that it does not apply to other soy products such as soy milk, tofu and tempeh.
